GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (AP) - Grand Rapids will lay off 22 firefighters to balance its budget
Tuesday and Wednesday to help fill a $9.2 million
hole in the city's fiscal budget and balance the $130 million
general fund budget.
The layoffs, which 24 Hour News 8 has reported on for months,
leaves the city with 184 firefighters.
City Manager Gregory Sundstrom calls the cuts "devastating"
but is applying for a federal grant that would save 20 of the jobs.
City commissioners on Tuesday approved a plan aimed saving up
to 12 firefighting jobs and 10 police officer jobs.
