GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - On Thursday night, some West Michigan families will be united
with their new children from Haiti.
The families had been in the adoption process before the
earthquake, but, given the dire need now, those adoptions have been
pushed forward.
The families and the children will rendezvous in Miami
Thursday night, and if all goes as planned, the children will be in
Michigan Friday night with their new families.
It is part of an expedited effort to get as many orphans out of
Haiti as quickly as possible, to make room for new children who may
have lost their parents and families in the earthquake.
There have been several rounds of these large lifts since the
earthquake.
This is probably the largest - a total of 58 children from the
same orphanage in Haiti, God's Littlest Angels. The adoptions are
being handled by Bethany Christian Services in Grand Rapids, the
largest private international adoption agency in the country.
The children are being placed with families throughout the
country.
A total of 14 children are coming to West Michigan for placement with 12 families. Two of the adoptive parents spoke with 24 Hour News 8 shortly before they left for Miami, and both are ready.
"To think that she's actually going to be home in a couple of days, yeah, it just doesnt' seem like a reality because it's been so long," said Kathy Baas.
Dawn Van Kuiken added, "It's been an emotional roller coaster. I'm really excited. It's hard to believe it's really happening."
24 Hour News 8 will continue to follow the progress of the Haiti adoptees.
