1 man dead after house party shooting

Another shooting victim remains hospitalized

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - One of two victims involved in a house party shooting in Grand Rapids has died.

Derecko Jamal Martin, 30, of Grand Rapids passed away at Spectrum Health Butterworth Hospital from the gunshot injuries. Martin was shot in the chest, head and another unknown location, police said.

Phillip Duane Williams, 23, was the other victim in the shooting. He is being treated at a hospital for his injuries.

According to the Grand Rapids Police Department, the shooting happened around 12:23 a.m. Saturday at a home in the 3200 block of Marshall Avenue SE. After the shooting, one of the victims ran from the house to the Twisted Bull Bar.

Police have been interviewing witnesses. So far, the witnesses have told police that prior to the shooting, a birthday party was being held at the house when a group of uninvited guests arrived.

Police said an argument started between the invited guests and the uninvited group. One of the uninvited guests took out a handgun. Some of the party guests tried to hold this person down when the gunshots were fired.

Police told 24 Hour News 8 there were about 20 people inside the home during the shooting.

Police do not have any suspects at this time and no arrests have been made.
