DEWITT, Mich. (WOOD) - Being an Olympic gold medalist has its perks; sometimes, you get to be the grand marshal of a hometown parade.
On Saturday, hundreds of DeWitt residents attended the 67th annual Ox Roast Festival to see Jordyn Wieber, WILX reports.
Wieber wowed the crowd just as she did in London during the 2012 Summer Games; waving and smiling from the back of a 1956 Thunderbird convertible. It was the first time the festival had an Olympian, let along a gold medalist, serve as the parade's grand marshal.
After the parade, Wieber signed autographs for fans who waited in a line that stretched more than a block. Wieber gave the medal to her father, David Wieber, to hold after signing a few autographs, WILX reports. He proudly showed it off to the crowd.
Wieber said she was overwhelmed that so many people cheered her on while she was in London.
"I love coming back to all this support, and just to be in the parade, and pass by all the people that were cheering me on while I was in London, it was truly amazing," Wieber told WILX.
Wieber said the best part of coming back home was sleeping in her own bed and being reunited with her dog.
