Carnel Chamberlain, 4, found burned on reservation

BAY CITY, Mich. (AP) - A prosecutor says the body of a 4-year-old mid-Michigan boy was buried and badly burned when found by authorities last week.

The disclosure was made Tuesday in Bay City federal court as a judge declined to grant bond to a man who's charged with abusing Carnel Chamberlain weeks before his death.

No one has been charged in Carnel Chamberlain's death. But authorities last week arrested Bennett and charged him with assault after finding the boy's body under the house.

Bennett lived with Carnel and the boy's mother in a house on the Saginaw Chippewa Indian reservation, 70 miles north of Lansing.

Jaimee Chamberlain says Bennett was in charge of watching Carnel while she worked on June 21. She told the FBI she had witnessed abuse earlier in June.

A memorial service for Carnel has been set for Sunday, July 15, according to a post on the Carnel's Hope For Tomorrow Facebook page.

The service will be at 2 p.m. at the Soaring Eagle Casino Concert Hall, which the post said was the only local venue large enough for the expected turnout.
