MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. (WOOD) - The family of a 4-year-old boy who was found badly burned under his front porch is working to stop domestic violence.
The body of Carnel Chamberlain, 4, was found June 28 under the porch of the home he shared with his mother and her boyfriend on Saginaw-Chippewa tribal land in Mount Pleasant. He had been missing for a week.
Carnel's mother's boyfriend Anthony Bennett now faces charges in federal court that he assaulted Carnel prior to his death.
Now, family spokesman Kevin Chamberlain told 24 Hour News 8, the family is working to create a memorial fund that would go to programs that combat domestic violence and child abuse.
Proceeds of merchandise sold on a tribal website will go to those organizations.
A memorial service for Carnel is scheduled for July 15 at 2 p.m. at the Soaring Eagle Casino Concert Hall. Doors will open at 1 p.m.
His burial is being delayed as the investigation into his death moves forward.
