DETROIT (AP) - Supporters of a former U.S. Marine detained in Iran on espionage charges are demonstrating and calling for action on the 500th day of his imprisonment.
Dawud Walid of the Council on American-Islamic Relations' Michigan chapter said the group is sending a message on Wednesday to Iran's U.N. Mission calling for the release of Amir Hekmati. Failing that, CAIR-Michigan's executive director says Hekmati deserves an "immediate, fair and transparent trial."
Hekmati, who was raised in Michigan, was arrested while visiting his grandmothers in Iran in August 2011. His parents live in the Flint area.
Iran convicted and sentenced Hekmati to death. That was overturned last January. The U.S. government has repeatedly denied he is a spy.
Family members are holding a silent demonstration outside Iran's U.N. mission in New York.
