GENESEE TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) - Prosecutors say they're bringing first-degree charges against an imprisoned killer in the 1993 death of a 19-year-old college student originally from Muskegon County.
Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton joined Genesee Township police Thursday to announce the charges against 42-year-old Mathew L. Adler. He's serving life in prison for a 1994 murder in Macomb County.
Authorities say they found the naked body of Wanda Musk along a road in the Flint-area community on Nov. 14, 1993. They say the Mott Community College student was last seen alive with a man who had his arm around her at the 1-Stop Food Store where she worked.
Leyton says authorities matched Alder's DNA to the case in January after a new law began requiring Michigan prisoners to give DNA samples.
Musk grew up in Twin Lake.
A Target 8 investigation in March revealed the break in this case came through the DNA samples required by the new law.
"After a while, we kept thinking, well, either (her killer) is dead, or he's in prison, or something," said Wanda Musk's uncle, Ron Mast of Twin Lake, at that time. "You don't know ... A person that you walk across the street could be the person that did it."
