MACKINAW CITY, Mich. (AP) - Authorities say a fifth-grade student from the Saginaw School District who was on a field trip has died in an apparent drowning at a hotel pool in Mackinaw City.
Police say 10-year-old Jaylyn Ferguson of Saginaw was found at the bottom of the Holiday Inn Express pool on Tuesday night by another student, and adults began CPR before an ambulance arrived.
The Zilwaukee International Studies School student was pronounced dead at a hospital in St. Ignace.
District spokeswoman Safiya Mosley says the students were visiting Mackinaw City and Mackinac Island. She says the trip was chaperoned by district staff, teachers and volunteers. Police say the group included nearly 40 students.
Saginaw is located about 85 miles northwest of Detroit and 170 miles southeast of Mackinaw City.
