Mom of Amber Alert son found dead

Husband is in custody

WEIDMAN, Mich. (WOOD) - A man is in jail accused of murdering his wife -- an incident that prompted an Amber Alert for their 4-year-old son.

Jason Fish, 34, was arraigned on four charges: open murder, being a felon in possession of a firearm, and two felony firearms charges.

Stephanie Fish, 34, was fatally shot Friday night in her home in the 900 block of N. Rolland Road in Sherman Township, west of Mount Pleasant, police said. A .22-caliber rifle was seized as possible evidence.

The Isabella County Sheriff's Department says the death stemmed from a domestic dispute on Friday night. Stephanie Fish was last seen around 7:30 p.m. that day at her home. The shooting apparently took place sometime after that, The Morning Sun reports.

After the shooting, Jason Fish drove to Grand Rapids with the couple's son, Brody, police said. The GPS on Jason's cell phone was even tracked to this Kent County area.

The Isabella County sheriff told 24 Hour News 8 that Jason and Brody spent Saturday night at a friend's home on the west side of Grand Rapids. Brody Fish appeared well taken care of, the sheriff said. Jason Fish told his friend only that he was in town and looking for a place to stay, police said.

Authorities were not made aware of the situation until Sunday after being told Stephanie and Brody were missing. Police originally treated the case as a missing persons case, and that Jason Fish was described as a “person of interest.”

The sheriff’s department then issued an Amber Alert later Sunday for the boy and his mother. Police warned the public to be on the lookout for Jason Fish's vehicle.

That vehicle with Jason and Brody inside was spotted Sunday evening in Genesee County. A traffic stop was made, and the suspect and his son were brought back to Mount Pleasant for questioning.

The Amber Alert was canceled, Jason Fish was arrested and Brody Fish was put in the care of relatives.
