LANSING, Mich. (AP) - Hundreds of people have gathered outside the Michigan Capitol for a gun-rights rally, a few days after President Barack Obama called for new restrictions.
Some people freely carried their guns during the rally Saturday. There were signs that said gun bans are ineffective, illegal, and only punish law-abiding citizens.
Laurence Wallace of Clinton Township says Obama's gun proposals violate the Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. Former Republican congressional candidate Don Volaric says he doubts that criminals will care about new restrictions.
President Obama is asking Congress to pass an assault-weapons ban, universal background checks and limits on high-capacity ammunition magazines.
Some Republican state lawmakers want to pass a bill that would exempt guns made in Michigan.
