Genetski's attorney: Show arrest video

MSU removed 6 minutes of video due to "privacy"

LANSING, Mich. (WOOD) - The attorney for state representative Bob Genetski is asking Michigan State University to release the entire video showing the lawmakers his drunk driving arrest.

Genetski was pulled over by MSU police following the State-of-the-State address in Lansing back in January.

A police cruiser dashcam video released to 24 Hour News 8 and other media outlets under the Freedom of Information Act has been redacted, removing about six minutes of video showing Genetski's responses to whether he had been drinking, as well as field sobriety tests, which Genetski's attorney, Mike Nichols, says his client passed.

The university says the redactions are appropriate because the information contains "information of a personal nature" that "would constitute a clearly unwarranted invasion of an individual's privacy," but Nichols disagrees.

Nichols contacted MSU on Friday and gave them authorization to release the full video.

"Bob is not comfortable specifically calling on MSU to release anything about his personal case or telling them to release anything because of his role as chair of higher education appropriations," said Nichols. "However, he is not embarrassed by anything on that video nor is any of it an unwarranted invasion. We never asked MSU to redact anything. We were never consulted by MSU about it either."

One thing not cut out of the tape is the Saugatuck lawmaker refusing to take a breathalyzer test.

24 Hour News 8 contacted MSU officials to see if they plan on releasing the unedited version, but they haven't responded.

Genetski is being charged with operating under the influence over .08. He is challenging the suspension of his license.
