EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) - For the first time in nearly 50 years, people are allowed to fish in the Red Cedar River on Michigan State University's campus.

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources announced Tuesday that hook-and-line fishing will be permitted on the north bank of the river between the western edge of Brody Complex and the Sparty bridge.

A 1960s ordinance banned fishing on MSU's campus. People were not allowed to hunt, gather or fish because the East Lansing campus is considered a preserve. There also were safety concerns about fishing in areas with high pedestrian traffic. The MSU board of trustees approved the change last December. The new law will undergo a three-year test period.

People interested in fishing in this part of the Red Cedar River must have a fishing license.
