HASTINGS, Mich. (WOOD) - Michigan State Police received a call at 5 a.m. Tuesday about an attempted suicide at a home in the 300 block of M-37 in Hastings.

State Police Lt. Steven Harper told 24 Hour News 8 at the scene that when troopers arrived they found a man in his early 40s who had detonated a pipe bomb.

A medical helicopter flew him to a Grand Rapids hospital.

Police believe the man was only trying to hurt himself, not the public. He was staying at the residence owned by a relative.

Troopers then blocked off a portion of M-37 near Airport Road after they noticed suspicious wiring on the dashboard of the man's car outside the residence. A police bomb squad and two robots examined the wiring and determined the situation safe.

The road was closed for four hours as troopers investigated.

Police are searching the home for any possible additional explosive devices.
