Shot on I-96: 'I'm freaking out'

DELTON, Mich. (WOOD) - The Delton man shot in the buttocks -- the latest target in a freeway shooting spree -- said the bullet is still inside him after doctors told him it was too dangerous to remove.

Scott Arnold, 46, the only victim injured in the two-dozen reported shootings in southeast Michigan, told 24 Hour News 8 he was driving on I-96 in Livingston County, headed to the World Series on Saturday, when he heard a loud explosion. At first, he thought he'd blown a tire.

He immediately felt pain in his hip, then reached around for the money clip in his back pocket. "It was covered in blood," he said.

Arnold said the bullet went through his car door, then through his left buttocks and is lodged in his lower abdomen.

"I've got a hole this big," he said, forming a circle with his thumb and forefinger.

He spoke off-camera to 24 Hour News 8 from his home near Delton. "I'm trying to focus on healing," he said.

He said he didn't want to go on-camera because the shooter was still on the loose. "I'm freaking out," he said.

Despite the shooting, Arnold had hoped to still make the Tigers game, but, instead, spent the evening at the hospital. "If I was there, they would have won," he joked.

Police say it was one of two weekend shootings linked to the spree of at least 24 reports of gunfire near I-96.

Authorities said one shooting occurred while a man was taking out his trash. In another incident, a woman said her car's rear window was shattered. Ten of the shootings have been in Wixom in Oakland County.

Saturday's shootings were the first since Oct. 18.
