HASTINGS, Mich. (WOOD) - Authorities in Barry County had to blow up a shed to dispose of explosive material.
Deputies were called to the 3300 block of River Road southeast of Hastings Wednesday following reports that explosives had been found in an old shed, according to the Barry County Sheriff's Department.
On a shelf in the shed, the deputies found a small, orange, metal box with a warning label stamped on it.
In the box, there were seven containers, each the size of a ballpoint pen, filled with an unknown explosive liquid, the sheriff's department said.
The Battle Creek Police Department Bomb Squad was called in, and soon determined that it would be too dangerous to attempt to move the box.
Instead, it was decided that the box would be blown up.
The explosion caused "extensive damage" to the shed, according to the sheriff's department.
The origin of the box and explosives is not yet known.
