FENNVILLE, Mich. (WOOD) - Nearly one year ago, 16-year-old Fennville basketball player Wes Leonard collapsed after hitting a game-winning shot.
Leonard died of a heart attack caused by an enlarged heart.
On Friday, his community will honor his life.
There will be a ceremony at mid-court before the varsity high school game. Leonard's family, coaches and teammates will be there as his jersey number is raised to the rafters and he is inducted into the Fennville Hall of Fame.
At Fennville's practice this week, head coach Ryan Klingler said the honor for Leonard is very much deserved.
"There's no doubt in my mind already he was one of the best athletes, kids that I've ever coached," said Klingler. "He was definitely going to be a hall-of-famer at some point."
The Wes Leonard Heart Team is making progress with its goal of getting an automatic external defibrillator -- a device that could have potentially saved Leonard's life -- in every school in the state.
So far, the foundation has donated about 30 AEDs to area schools.
