GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - A Kalamazoo man snagged a record-setting black buffalo while bowfishing on the Kalamazoo River in Allegan County.
Bryan DeGoede caught a 37.4-pound black buffalo on Sept. 5, the DNR confirmed to 24 Hour News 8. The black buffalo is a member of the sucker family of fish. DeGoede's catch was 39.3 inches long.
State records are recognized by weight only, and DeGoede's fish was verified by Jay Wesley, the DNR fisheries manager for southwest Michigan.
The previous record for a black buffalo was 33.25 pounds caught by Brad Nietering of Nunica in 2004.
