GRAAFSCHAP TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) - Five people escaped a fire that destroyed their two-story home and three vehicles in the garage.
Firefighters from multiple departments were dispatched around 1 a.m. Monday to the 4600 block of Castle Court in Graafschap Township, southwest of Holland.
Smoke detectors alerted the residents to the smoke and flames.
The homeowner told officials at the scene that the residents took some ashes out of the fireplace and threw them into their garbage can in the garage Sunday night. Officials say this is how the fire sparked in the garage.
