Driver sentenced in biker's death

ALLEGAN, Mich. (WOOD) - A man has been sentenced for causing a crash that resulted in the death of a motorcycle passenger.

Michael Awrey will spend 48 to 180 months behind bars on a charge of operating while intoxicated causing death, and three years on a charge of fleeing and eluding. He has received credit for five days already served.

The Martin man pleaded guilty Nov. 19.

The crash occurred May 19 near 129th Avenue and 8th Street in Bradley in Allegan County when Awrey's pickup truck collided into the back of a motorcycle, police said.

The wreck forced the bike and its riders -- Steven and Kimberly Roden of Shelbyville -- into a ditch. Kimberly, 49, died.

Awrey drove from the crash scene and was spotted by a Michigan State Police trooper who attempted to conduct a traffic stop but Awrey did not obey.

Awrey eventually stopped in a driveway in the Martin area and arrested following a "short struggle with the trooper," according to the Allegan County Sheriff's Department.
