FENNVILLE, Mich. (AP) - A new police department is among of several possible law enforcement changes headed for the Allegan County community of Fennville next year.

The Fennville City Commission last week approved starting the new city department on Jan. 1. It would replace the current $79,000 contract with the Allegan County Sheriff's Office for a deputy to patrol the 1.1-square-mile city.

The commission is planning to spend $65,000 for the one-person department in the almost 1,400-person town. The city also will pay for part-time clerical help for the new department. Fennville owns the police car the sheriff's deputy now uses.

Mayor Dan Rastall confirmed to 24 Hour News 8 the plan is expected to offer "significant savings."

The Allegan County Sheriff's Office has reduced road patrols due to budget cuts.
