GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - The trip from Kokomo, Ind., to Canon City, Colorado, would usually mean a drive west on busy U.S. 80, through Iowa and Nebraska -- unless you're in a car full of fugitives.

Instead, Gregory Bradshaw and Kenneth Grauman II took a southern route, west across U.S. 34, a divided highway through both states, with federal agents trying to track them.

Bradshaw and Grauman, along with Laura Grauman and Brittany Rector, had been last seen in Kokomo, Indiana on Oct. 4. They were seen in a grainy surveillance video inside a Kroger, narrowly missing being caught by police.

They dumped a stolen car there, then left town in a stolen pick-up truck.

Four days later, on Oct. 8, the four made a stop at a Dollar General store, just off the exit ramp in Glenwood, Iowa, a city of about 5,000 people.

That's where they reportedly stole a 2006 Nissan Altima.

"That was my car," said a store employee who answered the phone.  She said the thieves took her car keys from the break room, then took off. She says she never saw them.

It's not clear what they did with a pickup truck they had stolen four days earlier in Kokomo.

The next known stop was McCook, Nebraska, a town of 7,000 people along US-34, a divided highway that runs south of the much-busier I-80.

It's unclear at this time how the US Marshals tracked them there, or when the four arrived in McCook, but police say thay have surveillance images of them at a McCook business -- photos they are not sharing at this time.

They headed west then to Canon City in the stolen Nissan Altima, and checked into the Budget Host Inn on Oct. 10, using a false ID that may have been stolen, police said.

Investigators told 24 Hour News 8 the fugitives had two trac-phones that hadn't been activated and were using pay phones. They were also using cash, not credit cards, in an effort to avoid police.

It was at the Canon City motel where agents and local police arrested the men and found a loaded .357 and an active meth lab in their room. Their girlfriends were arrested in the Nissan Altima moments later.

The owner of that car told 24 Hour News 8 she was surprised it was used as a getaway car -- and she isn't sure she wants it back.
