LEIGHTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) - The driver of a pickup truck died after police said he did not stop at an intersection and his vehicle collided with a semi-truck.
It happened around 7:09 a.m. Thursday at 142nd Avenue and Kalamazoo Avenue, east of Dorr, in Allegan County.
Police said the victim was traveling north, slowed at the intersection but did not stop at the flashing traffic light, and pulled in front of the eastbound semi-truck.
The semi-truck driver tried to avoid a collision, police said, but the rig struck the pickup truck on the driver's side door. The pickup went into the yard of a residence, and the semi spun and came to a stop in the road.
The pickup driver -- 57-year-old Kenneth Near from Middleville -- was pronounced dead when rescue personnel took him to a hospital. Police said he was not wearing at seat belt at the time of the wreck.
The semi driver was not injured.
The road was blocked for about three hours as authorities investigated.
