VALLEY TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) - A woman was killed when a speed boat and a pontoon collided on Lake Allegan Sunday afternoon.
It happened about 1,000 yards out onto the western bay of the lake around 3 p.m. The speed boat was pulling an inflatable raft or tube with three people on it when it collided with the pontoon boat.
One of the people on the pontoon -- a woman -- was thrown off the boat and sustained head injuries. Another boater pulled her out of the water.
That woman later died at the hospital. She was identified by authorities Monday as 55-year-old Mary Srebro of Illinois.
A county medical examiner investigator was on-scene for a time.
The other person on the pontoon -- a man -- was also injured, but his injuries are not life-threatening. He was taken to a local hospital.
None of the six people on the speed boat (including the three on the inflatable) were seriously injured. They received treatment on the scene for minor injuries.
The pontoon, called "Believe It or Knot," had an Illinois registration sticker on it. The speed boat passengers are also from out-of-state, 24 Hour News 8 was told.
There was blood all over both boats.
The cause of the crash is not yet known, but authorities said that alcohol does not appear to be a factor.
Some of the people from the speed boat told 24 Hour News 8 that authorities told them not to provide any information because it was a "criminal investigation."
The sheriff's office said Monday that it was still investigating the cause of the crash. It's not yet known who, if anyone, will face charges in the crash.
Other boaters said there were few boats on the lake despite the pleasant conditions and said they don't understand how the crash could have happened.
