12-year-old still critical after crash

Travis Rouwhorst's brother Justin didn't stop sign

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - A 12-year-old remains in critical condition more than a week after a serious car crash near Hamilton.

On June 4, Travis Rouwhorst was airlifted to DeVos Children's Hospital after the car driven by his brother Justin Rouwhorst, 17, was broadsided when Justin failed to obey a stop sign at the intersection of 46th Street and 140th Avenue in Overisel Township.

Travis had to be put into a medical coma, according to his CarePage, after sustaining severe injuries to multiple areas of his brain.

A June 11 post said that Travis had only a 5% chance of surviving three days after the crash.

The coma was deepened Tuesday in an effort to improve his vitals and reduce pressure in his brain. Doctors said it's too soon to tell if the boy is getting any better.

"Only time will tell if he will be able to wake himself up," a June 12 post said.

The CarePage includes repeated requests for prayers.

There is no word yet on whether Justin Rouwhorst will face charges in connection to the crash. He also suffered injuries, but they were not as serious as Travis's.

Authorities said failing to stop at signs in the area of the crash is common.
