Young man dies in apartment shooting

GRANDVILLE, Mich. (WOOD) - A man in his early 20s was shot to death inside a Grandville apartment early Sunday morning, and another man about the same age is in custody.

The shooting inside the Wimbledon Apartments, off Rivertown Parkway near Wilson Avenue, was reported at 12:19 a.m.

Four people lived in the apartment -- a woman, an infant boy and two men, one of whom is the suspected shooter.

However, according to a statement from Wimbledon Apartments, the people involved in the shooting were not leaseholders or registered tenants of the apartment, although one of the registered occupants of the apartment did dial 911.

According to court documents, Daniel Chinchak is in custody and has been booked on warrants connected with the shooting.

Grandville Police said the victim was only visiting. They believe an argument and alcohol led to the shooting.

"The shots took place inside the apartment, I believe in the kitchen area. A 45 caliber handgun," said Grandville Deputy Chief Dan Steere. "The victim suffered a head wound."

The suspected shooter was arrested at the scene.

Residents heard the commotion and wanted to see what was happening.

"I came out on my deck to see what was going on, because I heard the police radio and they told me very sternly to go back inside," said resident Troy Case. "They had about two people in custody and at that time I looked outside and they were on their knees and taking them to the police cars."

At that time, police were still searching for the shooter and had taped off the parking lot. Residents were only allowed inside with permission and an escort.

"And at the base of the stairs they said one coming up, and they said my apartment number," resident Sudan Swanson told 24 Hour News 8. "Then they escorted me up the stairs an to my door. They were not playing."

No one else in the apartment was injured. Police said the shooting happened while the baby was asleep in another room. No other suspects are being sought.

A statement released from Wimbledon Apartments reads: There were no prior lease violations against the leaseholders nor was any known criminal history identified during a recent lease renewal background check. The current tenants had lived in the apartment since 2010. Due to the lease violation of having a gun in an apartment, the tenants will be served a 30-day notice to vacate.

The name of the victim is not being released until his family is notified.
