W. Mich roads on 'hazardous' roads list

Report lists roads with safety deficiencies

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - The U.S. Department of Transportation has released the Michigan 2012 Transparency Report of locations exhibiting severe safety problems, and many West Michigan roadways are included on the list.

The "5 Percent Report" for the Federal Highway Administration is required by federal law, which demands state identify safety problems and provide resolutions to those problems. It was prepared by the Michigan Department of Transportation.

Several Grand Rapids-area ramps and stretches of road are listed in the report. All have seen multiple accidents. A few have seen fatalities.

Ramps

  • Southbound U.S. 131 to 68th Street
  • Southbound U.S. 131 to 44th Street
  • Northbound U.S. 131 to Burton Street

Roads

  • Alpine Avenue between Coventry Drive and Alpine Church Street
  • East Beltline between Fulton Street and just north of I-96
  • Northbound U.S. 131 between Hall and Franklin streets
  • 28th Street between Buchanan and Division avenues
  • Northbound U.S. 131 from a quarter-mile south of I-196 and I-196
  • Wilson Avenue at O'Brien Road SW
  • Southbound U.S. 131 at the Wealthy Street on-ramp

Other West Michigan areas included on the list:

  • M-43 between Ninth Street and Maple Hill Drive in Oshtemo Township
  • Southbound U.S. 31 ramp to Laketon Avenue in the Muskegon area
  • 30th Street between 120th Avenue and 122nd Avenue in Allegan
  • A quarter-mile stretch of Luce Street east of the 26th Street intersection in Tallmadge Township
  • 133rd Avenue and Bowens Mills Road and Patterson Road in Allegan and Barry counties

Included on the report are plans to improve the safety of the "hazardous locations," along with potential costs and problems.

Michigan has about 122,000 miles of public road, 92% of which are handled by local municipalities, according to the report.
