PAW PAW, Mich. (WOOD) - An inmate who escaped the Van Buren County jail Saturday evening was caught early Sunday morning,
Matthew Brady was found walking along eastbound I-94 by the Michigan State Police.
He was serving time in the Van Buren County Jail for failure to pay child support, investigators said.
Sheriff's officials say Brady was considered a " trusty ," meaning he was allowed to do work in and around the jail under looser supervision than other inmates.
Brady was salting sidewalks near the jail and county courthouse building when he left the premises, a sheriff's official told 24 Hour News 8.
Jail officials suspect that Brady, who was only slated to spend several days in jail, was trying to get home for the holidays.
Because of the escape, Brady now faces more serious felony charges.
