BATTLE CREEK, Mich. (WOOD) -

The 19th Senate district seat has been empty since Democrat Mark Schauer left for his new job as a U.S. Congressman.

Now, Republican Mike Nofs will hold that seat.

Nofs is a former state representative, Calhoun County commissioner and state police officer. He beat Democrat Martin Griffin, independent Steven Mobley and Libertarian Greg Merle.

Nofs' victory won't have an impact over who controls the Senate. Republicans already have a 21-seat majority.
