GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (AP) - Graduates at Grand Valley State University are leaving campus with encouragement from the daughter of late President Gerald Ford.

Susan Ford Bales told them Saturday to "go forth with passion." She challenged GVSU graduates to serve the country and make a difference. About 1,000 students participated in commencement at Van Andel Arena in downtown Grand Rapids.

Bales is a trustee for the Gerald R. Ford Historical Legacy Trust and the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Foundation. She's also a global ambassador for efforts against breast cancer. Grand Valley President Thomas Haas introduced Bales as a woman who "has done it all and quite a bit more."

Bales publicly offered condolences to the family of Jessie Winterholler, a Grand Valley student who died Friday after being struck by a car .
