Suspended, faces possible expulsion

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - A 5th-grade Grand Rapids Public School student was suspended for bringing a toy gun to school.

A Sherwood Elementary School student brought an orange-tipped toy gun to school Friday morning, said GRPS spokesman John Helmholdt.

The toy gun was found during mid-morning recess at the elementary school, 3859 Chamberlain SE.

Helmholdt said GRPS treats this incident as if the student brought a real weapon to school, and the student has been suspended. "The key is fair, firm and consistent implementation of the school discipline code," he told 24 Hour News 8.

The recommendation is that the student be expelled from school. But that outcome will be determined through a hearing process.

The case is currently being reviewed by the Grand Rapids Police Department to determine if the child will face any criminal charges.
