Dems win 2 Mich Board of Ed seats

DETROIT (AP) - Democrats have won both open seats on the Michigan Board of Education, extending their majority to 6-2 over Republicans on the board.

Michelle Fecteau of Detroit and Lupe Ramos-Montigny of Grand Rapids earned more votes Tuesday than two Republicans and five third-party candidates in the field.

Five Democrats and three Republicans made up the eight voting members of the current board entering Tuesday's election. Democrat Marianne Yared McGuire didn't seek re-election, and Republican Nancy Danhof didn't earn her party's nomination.

Fecteau is executive director of the union that represents faculty and academic staff at Wayne State University. Ramos-Montigny is a retired school teacher and state Democratic Party official.

Fecteau says she's excited to get started, and "there's a lot of work to do."
