GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - One of the proposals Superintendent Bernard Taylor recently made was a city-wide graduation event that would bring all the city high schools together at Houseman Field.
But some students aren't pleased with that plan. Dozens showed up to protest the expanded graduation.
However, the reason for the protest seems to be rooted in confusion. Protesters say they want to keep their individual ceremonies.
But every graduate would walk across the stage to get their diploma, and school officials are considering entering a contest to have President Obama speak at commencement.
School officials said the group commencement is just an idea being discussed, and even if they opt for a group event, city schools will still have individual ceremonies.
"I just think that we should have our own, to keep it traditional, like how it's been going," student Paris Lara said.
GRPS spokesperson John Helmholdt respects the student protest. "It's democracy in action. Sometimes the rumor mill does fly. We're talking about it. We're not talking about it as a replacement."
