GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - Recess is over. It's time for everyone to get back to school. That means fresh supplies of pencils, backpacks, paper and other items for students.
Many places are helping provide supplies for parents and students. Here is a partial list compiled by 24 Hour News 8:
- Comerica Bank collected supplies at their 197 banking centers in Michigan, including pens, pencils, markers, crayons, notebooks, erasers, and backpacks. In cooperation with Operation: Kid Equip , a Michigan charity, the supplies will be delivered to deserving schools in the communities that Comerica serves.
- Huntington Bank collected backpacks and school supplies at its 27 area locations. The bank partnered with FOX V.O.I.C.E , and all donations will go to the Grand Rapids Public Schools.
- York Creek Apartments and the Comstock Park community collected new, unused backpacks and school supplies to distribute to kids in need at Comstock Park Public Schools and Kenowa Hills Schools.
Backpacks and supplies were distributed to families by Comstock Park Public Schools on August 16 from at the Comstock Park Expo at the Comstock Park High School.
- Vista Charter Academy School will collect general school supplies plus gently used uniforms (navy pants, khaki pants, red-white-blue collared shirts) on Aug. 25. The Supply Drive will be held at the school parking lot, 711 32nd Street SE, from 8 a.m - 6 p.m.
- On August 17, over 200 school-aged children, many homeless and underprivileged, received a free backpack full of school supplies from the H olland Rescue Mission . Their Back-2-School Bash will held at Trinity Reformed Church in Holland, 712 Apple Avenue.
- Michigan Podiatric Medical Association (MPMA) partnered across the state with local nonprofit organizations to help local families prepare for the upcoming school year. In West Michigan, they worked with Mel Trotter Ministries and Payless Shoe Store on a New Shoe and Sock Drive, and many individual podiatrists purchased shoes and socks to support the drive.
They will be distributed between noon - 3 p.m. on Tuesday, August 23 at Mel Trotter Ministries , 225 Commerce SW, Grand Rapids.
Lake Michigan Credit Union's One Pencil Project is collecting new, unopened school supplies at all their branch offices . You can also make a cash donation for a specific area classroom that will be delivered by the credit union.
On August 20, the first 200 students to arrive at the Nazarene Community Recourse Center will receive a free backpack and can play games to win free school supplies. The event begins at 1 p.m, and the center is located at the corner of Mill Iron and Evanston in Muskegon.
