Taylor eval. vote expected this month

'Still in discussion,' president says

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - The Grand Rapids school board president expects a decision on Superintendent Bernard Taylor's evaluation by the end of the month, she told 24 Hour News 8 on Monday night.

That would require a special meeting. Monday was the last scheduled meeting for the current board. Next month, board members Catherine Mueller and Lisa Hinkel will be gone, replaced by Dr. Monica Randles and Raynard Ross.

A positive evaluation would extend the superintendent's contract by another year. Breaking ties with Taylor could lead to thousands of dollars in severance costs for the district.

At the beginning of Monday's meeting, board president Senita Lenear said the board was still "in discussion" about the matter. She had told reporters last week she was hoping for a Monday vote and told the Grand Rapids Press on Friday that a Monday vote was still the plan.

Board members did allow public comment discussing the superintendent, citing public belief that a decision would come Monday night.

Some on the board blamed the media for that perception.

Last week, board members spent hours discussing the evaluation and the superintendent's contract. Lenear and Taylor had said a discussion about the future was needed after the superintendent lost his bid to become CEO of the Cleveland school system.

Comments about the superintendent Monday night were largely supportive.

Though he said he hesitated to compare the school district to a business, Eric Foster likened Taylor to a successful executive who had eyed other positions.

"You don't get prohibitive or get into retribution or unfair standards of looking at someone's performance," Foster said. "You recognize that talent and you do what you can to keep them here."

Former college dean Don Williams said changing superintendents now would be a setback for students who are making progress.
