GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - Students at Campus Elementary had a challenging first day back Wednesday, considering the heat and humidity.
The Grand Rapids Public Schools district brought in fans and bottled water to help students keep cool.
School officials recognize the strain hot weather can have on children, they said. But in this economy, the finances aren't available to make air conditioning a priority.
"The way we're funded, there are very limited funds for facilities, infrastructure (and) technology," district spokesman John Helmholdt told 24 Hour News 8. "We have deferred maintenance on many of these buildings well past when we should be replacing a boiler -- we push it to the limit."
GRPS can use a severe weather day to cancel school for heat, but temperatures would have to spike high enough to put safety or students' health in jeopardy.
Campus is one of five schools that follows GRPS's year-round calendar.
