GRPS school to be cut from failing list

State official: Lincoln School will be removed

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - Grand Rapids Public Schools' Lincoln School, which serves special education students from communities throughout Kent County, will be removed from a state list of the bottom 5-percent performers, a state education official told 24 Hour News 8 Thursday.

Superintendent Bernard Taylor had expressed surprise about the appearance on the list when it was announced June 14.

The Michigan Department of Education combined 2007-2009 math and English proficiency scores with the rate of improvement in each area to create the rankings. The 5 percent of schools at the bottom of the list are eligible for federal improvement dollars. The state later released a full top-to-bottom ranking of schools based on the criteria

But "center-based" schools that serve a countywide population should not have been included on the list and Lincoln will now be removed from it, Linda Forward of the MDE told 24 Hour News 8.

"To date, four other schools with similar circumstances were also removed from the list. Should others surface, they will also be removed from the list," she said.

Perhaps more importantly, the removal of Lincoln means it will not be included on another 5-percent list, based on newer data and set to be released by September 1.

If schools on that new list do not improve in the coming years, they could be taken over by the state.
