GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - The departure of a top Grand Rapids Public Schools administrator could complicate the process of replacing Superintendent Bernard Taylor, should he leave for the top school job in Cleveland.
Lisa Freiburger, deputy superintendent of finance and operations for GRPS, is set to take a vice president's job at Grand Rapids Community College.
Taylor is among three finalists in the search for a new CEO of the Cleveland Metropolitan School District. The school system hopes to have a new leader by June 1, a spokeswoman said.
And GRPS board President Senita Lenear told 24 Hour News 8 she does not believe the district could find a permanent replacement for Taylor between that time and July 1, when the district's fiscal year begins.
Hired in 1995, Freiburger could have been a go-to pick to serve as superintendent -- at least on an interim basis -- should Taylor leave.
And Lenear acknowledged the district is working on succession planning as it looks to replace two other top-level administrators.
"Certainly if you're looking at what you have internally, our options are dwindling with Lisa Freiburger leaving," she told 24 Hour News 8.
The board president said it's often easy to find an interim from among an organization's current ranks "so we'll just have to play that by ear and as that decision is made and as we're already looking at succession planning, we'll just have to make the best decision at that time."
The board plans to wait on a decision of Cleveland before taking any action, Lenear said.
