ALLENDALE, Mich. (WOOD) -- A proposed $70 million expansion and renovation of the existing library on the Allendale campus of Grand Valley State University got the go-ahead from their board of trustees.
The project will expand the current Zumberge Library , and upgrade it to help students access more information digitally.
The Mary Idema Pew Library and Information Commons will include group study rooms and an automated storage/retrieval system for 600,000 books. There would also be open shelving for another 150,000 books.
In a statement, GVSU president Thomas Haas said the new library will not raise tuition. "This new library has been our top priority for years and our students need us to get started with it."
It's estimated the project will create 1500 design and construction jobs. Construction is expected to begin in Spring 2011 and be completed in 2013.
The Zumberge Library was built in 1969 when GVSU's projected student body was 5,000. Currently, GVSU has 24,400 students.
