DEARBORN, Mich. (AP) - Tens of thousands of Michigan students took the MEAP social studies exam in a unique way this fall.

They took it online.

The pilot exam was given to about 35,000 students in nearly 100 school districts statewide.

According to the Detroit Free Press , it marks the first time any portion of the Michigan Educational Assessment Program exam has been given online.

Yasmine Slimani is a sixth-grader at Unis Middle School in Dearborn. Yasmine says "the online test really made it much simpler than doing it on paper."

No formal data is available yet on the social studies pilot exam, but state officials say they're encouraged by what they've heard informally from local educators.

The pilot exam began in October and ran through early November.
