GREENVILLE, Mich. (WOOD) - United Solar Ovonic's parent company announced Tuesday it will cut about 115 factory and non-factory jobs in Greenville and Auburn Hills.
Energy Conversion Devices has cut about 300 workers worldwide, and suffered a 70% decrease in the last fiscal quarter of March 2011.
United Solar Ovonic received $1.5 million in July 2009 to make solar rooftop systems for Department of Defense buildings in Battle Creek.
The plant originally was developed in hopes of creating more local jobs in the Battle Creek area, and to help break the country's dependence on foreign oil.
Uni-Solar was heralded as the high-tech savior of Greenville after the city lost thousands of jobs when appliance-maker Electrolux moved to Mexico.
