BC, Muskegon on 'most dangerous' list

BATTLE CREEK, Mich. (WOOD) - Two West Michigan cities are among the most dangerous in the US, according to real estate search website NeighborhoodScout.com.

Muskegon ranked 99th on NeighborhoodScout's list of the 100 most dangerous cities in the US. Battle Creek was listed as 61st.

The rankings, which are limited to cities with a population of more than 25,000, were calculated by the number of violent crimes per 1,000 residents, as reported to the FBI in 2011. 2012 data is not yet available. Violent crimes include murder, forcible rape, armed robbery and aggravated assault.

Muskegon had 375 violent crimes per 1,000 residents, according to NeighborhoodScout, and Battle Creek had 579 violent crimes per 1,000 residents.
 
In 2010, Battle Creek was ranked the 37th most dangerous city in the US by NeighborhoodScout. Muskegon was not on the list.

Forbes magazine in April listed Battle Creek as the 9th most dangerous city for women.

Other Michigan cities on the list include Pontiac at 81st and Lansing at 80th. Additionally, four of the top 10 most dangerous cities are in Michigan: Inkster ranked 10th, Detroit ranked 6th, Saginaw ranked 5th and Flint ranked 3rd.

East St. Louis, Illinois ranked the most dangerous city.
