GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - The United Way spoke Monday night to about 50 residents at the Wealthy Street Theatre about how $500,000 from a state settlement with Countrywide Financial Corp. will be used to help people facing foreclosure.

Michigan Attorney General Mike Cox had originally pledged the money for two parks, but that idea drew criticism. This weekend he announced it was instead going to the Heart of West Michigan United Way.

The president of that group told 24 Hour News 8 the money will be used on those who need the help the most.

"We'll use those existing programs to look at proposals from community-based groups who really have some skill and expertise in the area of housing," said Robert Haight, president of the Heart of West Michigan United Way.

Along with the United Way's 2-1-1 system, the United Way is looking at Kent County's Essential Needs Task Force and the Emergency Food and Shelter Program as partners in helping distribute the money.
