BYRON CENTER, Mich. (WOOD) - 24 Hour News 8 has learned the Grand Rapids Police Department arrested Tim Grider, 44, on Wednesday for being with a prostitute.
The teacher from Byron Center West Middle School was arraigned on Thursday. We obtained court documents that show he is facing one count of gross indecency between a male and female committing and procuring. This is a five-year felony or $2,500 fine and requires mandatory AIDS and sexually transmitted disease tests.
Grider's bond was set at $5,000 bond. One of the conditions of the bond is Grider is restricted from frequenting the S. Division Avenue area in Grand Rapids for reasons of prostitution.
Byron Center Public Schools Superintendent Daniel Takens confirms an employee was placed on paid administrative leave and "this employee was not in school today. So this employee found out outside of school. I just wanted to reassure parents that it had nothing to do with the school district or any children in the school district. It was an incident that occurred away from the community and last evening."
24 Hour News 8 spoke with Grider's attorney, Gerald Lykins, who echoed a similar statement. He said the alleged incident does not affect a student and did not involve anything that happened in Grider's professional capacity.
"Disappointment, sadness, maybe being upset. But mostly about the welfare of children. When incidents are reported to me, the first thing I think about is how would that impact our children," said Takens.
Takens says a school search Thursday by the Kent County Sheriff's Department was coincidental. It was unrelated to the incident involving Grider.
Grider's preliminary exam is set for the March 30.
24 Hour News 8 went to Grider's home in Alto, looking for his side of the story. But no luck, as no one answered the door.
24 Hour News 8 discovered court documents that state Nicole Rae Brimmer, 21, is the prostitute that Grider was with when he was arrested. She too was taken into custody and charged Thursday with the same crime as Grider.
She is being held on a $15,000 bond.
As of October 31, 2008 she was on probation and charged with a second offense of prostitution. That is because she was busted on July 9, 2008 for soliciting prostitution and a probation violation.
