GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - The State House and Senate have announced the passing of yet another extension to emergency unemployment compensation benefits.
The extension would extend the total number of weeks people could collect unemployment benefits to 79.
The money will come out of federally allotted dollars.
Last June the regular 26 week compensation period was extended by 20 weeks. Since then, there have been two additional 13 week extensions. This latest move tacks on seven additional weeks.
State Senator Jason Allen (R-Traverse City) told 24 Hour News 8, "That extension is going to mean a great deal to thousands of families in our state. We're lending a helping hand at a pivotal moment in their lives, while we continue to work on bringing more jobs to Michigan."
Lawmakers say a ratified version should be presented to Governor Jennnifer Granholm any day, and could be signed into law early next week.
