PORTAGE, Mich. (WOOD) - Police say somebody hacked the computer system of a Portage business and stole financial information of customers.

The breach involving the Spicy Pickle at 3774 W. Centre Avenue happened in late November. Company officials say it did not occur at the business or on a local level. An FBI agent, who has been investigating similar fraud cases across the country, told company officials that there is a common denominator in all instances - a possible “open port” weakness within the software sold by a popular manufacturer.

Company officials said on Dec. 4 more than 150 people are victims, including some management and staff members.

Police say there could be more once customers see bogus charges - some as high as $600 from such places as South Carolina and Wisconsin - on their bill statements from September, October and November.

Those at the Spicy Pickle say all credit cards are now being swiped manually at the business, and all computer and software equipment has been replaced.

If you think you are a victim then you should contact your credit card company immediately and the Portage Police Department.
