GRANDVILLE, Mich. (WOOD) - Did you know Michigan law protects you and puts money back in your pocket if a store overcharges you on a product?

A 24 Hour News 8 producer noticed a sign at the Grandville Walmart store. It says if you're overcharged on a product, the store will pay you $3.

It's a little deceiving because under Michigan law you can get up to $5.

The state's item pricing law says that if a scanner charges you more than the price marked on the item, the store must refund you the difference, plus 10 times the amount you were overcharged up to $5.

So what about that sign?

The manager at the Walmart store told 24 Hour News 8 it is a corporate-wide policy because not every state has a law like Michigan's. She says they use the Michigan law even thought the sign says they will give you $3, not $5.

There are some things you need to know about the law -

  • To get what many stores call the Michigan Bounty, your transaction must be complete and you have to have a receipt showing you were overcharged.
  • If you notify the clerk of the error before you pay, the store must give you the price marked, but you are not entitled to the bonus.
  • Sale items don't qualify for the bonus.
  • If you are overcharged on several duplicate items, you only get the bonus once.

The best advice -- check those receipts.
