Berrien County (WOOD) - An Illinois man is dead after a crash involving 12 semi-trucks and around 100 other vehicles near St. Joseph.

The crash happened at 12:38 p.m. Sunday on eastbound I-94 near Niles Road (exit 27).

The accident happened when a Canadian semi tractor was stopped due to other accidents on the road in the left hand lane and was rear-ended by Dr. Raymond Candage III, a 31-year-old Elgin, Illinois man.

Candage's 2007 Hyundai Accent hit the right rear corner of the semi trailer, which sheared off the vehicle's roof and caused the fatal injury.

The semi was driven by Joseph Bernard, a 42-year-old man from London, Ontario. He and his passenger were not injured in the crash.

At the time of the crash, the road was snow covered and slippery, and high winds were generating white-out conditions.

Speeds too fast for conditions appear to have been a factor in the crash, police said.
