GRAND RAPIDS (WOOD) - Grand Rapids Police responding to an incident where witnesses say at least 16 cars were damaged by a pothole.
The offender is in the eastbound lane of Burton St. west of Palace Ave. and east of U.S. 131 in Grand Rapids.
Some people pulled into a Mobile gas station at the corner of Burton and Palace, after their cars hit the pothole.
Some of the affected couldn't even drive their cars away the damage was so bad, while others had multiple tires gouged.
There was a spirit of cooperation among those who hit the pothole, as some were helping others change tires so they could get on the road again.
Grand Rapids Police received so many calls about the pothole they sent an officer out to guide traffic around it until city crews could repair it.
Within 50 feet of the pothole there were at least a dozen wheel covers and hubcaps along the road.
A woman who has property along the street says she piles them up on the side of the Burton in case the owners come back and try to get them.
Storm Team 8 Meteorologist Kyle Underwood says the big temperatures definitely increase the number of potholes you see.
"The big swings in temperatures that we're having right now are disastrous for road ways," Underwood said. "These kind of events will increase the number of potholes we see."
This is just one of the many potholes around West Michigan. If you see more try to avoid crushing your own tires. If you are unfortunate enough to hit one, call police so that they can know it's there and alert the road crews to fix it.
