Zeeland, Mich. (WOOD) - State Representative Bill Huizenga (R)-Zeeland, plans to run for the congressional seat held by U.S. Rep. Pete Hoekstra.
At a press conference in Zeeland Tuesday morning, Huizenga announced his candidacy for Michigan's 2nd Congressional District.
Hoekstra announced Monday he would not seek re-election.
Huizenga served as Hoekstra's Director of Public Policy for six years prior to 2002, the year he was elected to the State House of Representatives.
In a release to the media, Huizenga said, "I now look forward to talking with the people of the 2nd District as we move toward the next election."
"As a State Representative and a small-business owner I have the background and passion to confront the challenges that face Michigan today.
I want to continue my service to the families of West Michigan and fight for your values in Washington , D.C."
Huizenga is the first candidate to announce intentions of running for the 2nd Congressional District.
